welcome to

There’s nothing quite like the glow of pregnancy—it’s a time of excitement, wonder, and a love that grows with each passing day. You want to document this incredible journey, but when is the best time to book maternity portraits? I get asked this all the time by expecting moms who want to document their pregnancy journey. With years of experience in photographing these precious moments, I’ve found that the 28-34 week window is just right. Continue scrolling to see why this timing works so well and how it can help you create maternity portraits that truly reflect this unforgettable chapter of your life!

Why 28-32 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot

The 28-34 week range is typically considered the best time to book your maternity session. Here’s why:

1. The Perfect Bump

By 28 weeks, most likely your belly will be prominently showing, yet you’re likely still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session. This stage is ideal for documenting the full glow of pregnancy without the discomfort that often comes later.

2. Comfort and Mobility

During the 28-34 week period, most expectant mothers still feel relatively comfortable. This is important because your comfort will directly impact how relaxed and natural you appear in your portraits. After 34 weeks, some women may begin to feel more physically uncomfortable, making it harder to enjoy the experience fully.

3. Timing Before the Final Stretch

As you approach the final weeks of your pregnancy, there’s always the possibility of your baby arriving earlier than expected. Booking your maternity session between 28-34 weeks ensures you won’t miss the opportunity to document this incredible time in case your little one decides to make an early entrance.

Every Pregnancy Is Unique

While the 28-34 week range is generally ideal, it’s important to remember that every pregnancy is different. Some women may feel comfortable booking their session earlier if their bump is already showing beautifully, while others might prefer to wait a little longer. The key is to choose a time when you feel your best and are excited to document your pregnancy.

Consider Your Bump

Some women start showing earlier, while others may develop a more noticeable bump closer to the third trimester. If you feel that your bump is at its best a little earlier or later than the suggested timeframe, go with what feels right for you.

Personal Comfort

Your comfort is paramount. If you’re feeling great and want to document your pregnancy a bit earlier, that’s perfectly okay. Similarly, if you want to wait until you have a larger bump, that’s a wonderful option too.

Booking Your Maternity Session

When you’re ready to schedule your maternity session, keep the 28-34 week range in mind, but don’t be afraid to adjust based on how you feel. Whether you choose the season your little one is to arrive or the season before, the goal is to capture the beauty of your journey in a way that feels authentic to you.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session

Once you’ve decided on the timing, it’s time to start thinking about the details. Consider what you’ll wear, whether you’d like to include your partner or other children, and the overall feel of your session. As a newborn photographer, I’m here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring your maternity portraits are a reflection of your journey & how you want that story to be told.

While 28-32 weeks is often ideal, the most important factor is how you feel about your pregnancy and your bump. The best time to book your maternity session is when you feel ready to document this special chapter of your life Remember, this is your journey, and your maternity portraits should be a beautiful reminder of this incredible time.

Baby Registry Must Haves

Educational

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! As you eagerly prepare for the arrival of your little one, creating a baby registry is an exciting step towards ensuring you have all the essentials to welcome your baby into the world with comfort and joy. As a Cleveland newborn photographer and mom to two, I’ve gathered baby registry must haves you don’t want to forget! These essential items will make those early days with your newborn a breeze. (Or to be honest, just a little bit easier!) 😉

Baby Registry Must Haves

1. Boppy Pillow:

The Boppy Pillow is a versatile and essential item for both breastfeeding and bottle-feeding moms. Its design provides support and comfort for you and your baby during feeding sessions, and it can also be used for propping, tummy time, and sitting support as your baby grows. Not only did I use this often my boys’ first year, I also used it those first few weeks postpartum! (You can thank me later on that one!)

2. Rocking Chair:

A comfortable rocking chair is a nursery essential for feeding, cuddling, and bonding with your baby. Choose a chair with plush cushions and gentle rocking motion. It will be such a lifesaver to you during those long, sleepless nights! I love this one we have here that also reclines!

3. Velcro or Zip Swaddles:

Swaddling is a time-saving technique for helping newborns feel secure and sleep more soundly. Velcro or zip swaddles make swaddling a breeze, allowing you to wrap your baby snugly and securely without the hassle of folding blankets.

4. Sound Machine:

A sound machine is a game-changer for creating a calm and sleep-inducing environment for baby. Choose a sound machine with white noise, lullabies, or nature sounds to help drown out background noise and promote better sleep for your little one.

5. NoseFrida:

A stuffy nose can make your baby uncomfortable and interfere with feeding and sleep. The NoseFrida, is a gentle and effective tool for clearing your baby’s nasal passages and helping them breathe easier.

6. Video Baby Monitor:

A video baby monitor provides peace of mind by allowing you to keep an eye on your baby from anywhere in your home. Choose a monitor with features like night vision, two-way audio, and temperature monitoring to stay connected and informed about your baby’s well-being.

7. Wildbird Sling:

A baby sling or carrier is a convenient and practical way to keep your baby close while having your hands free. My second lived in this the first three months! It was so handy to take to the grocery store. I also still use it now with him at 15 months on my back! The Wildbird Sling, known for its stylish designs and comfortable fabrics, allows you to carry your baby comfortably and securely while on the go.

8. Car Video Monitor:

A car video monitor provides added safety and peace of mind when traveling with your baby. With a car video monitor, you can keep an eye on your baby’s car seat from the front seat, ensuring they are safe and secure throughout the journey. I love ours!

9. Baby Bouncer:

A baby bouncer is a lifesaver for parents who need a safe place to set their baby down for a moment. Choose a bouncer with gentle vibrations, interactive toys, and adjustable recline positions to keep your baby entertained and comfortable.

10. Pacifier Clip:

Keep your baby’s pacifier clean and within reach with a pacifier clip. This handy accessory attaches securely to baby’s clothing or bib, preventing the pacifier from getting lost or dirty while on the go.

As you prepare to welcome your little one into the world, having the right baby registry must haves will help you feel confident and prepared for the journey ahead. From feeding and sleeping to bonding and travel, these essential items will support you and your baby every step of the way. Happy registry shopping, and here’s to the wonderful adventure ahead!

A Guide to Baby Shower Invitations & Birth Announcements

Educational

Embracing the arrival of a newborn transcends mere celebration. From the ethereal celebration of a baby shower to the resounding proclamation of a birth announcement, each gesture is an ode to life’s most precious treasures. As a seasoned newborn photographer, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of capturing these exquisite moments in their purest form. Today, we will indulge in the artistry of creating bespoke baby shower invitations and birth announcements alongside a visionary stationery artist, with sophistication and luxury into every aspect of welcoming your newest family member.

Interview With Meg Morrow Design

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey as a stationery artist?

My name is Meg Morrow and I am a wedding stationer located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. I design wedding invitations, day-of paper and other fun paper goods for weddings and events. I started my business over 10 years ago when planning my own wedding and fell in love with designing all my stationery details. I offer luxury wedding and event invitations through both an online collection as well as custom design for couples and hostesses looking for a fresh take on traditional stationery.

What advice do you have for new parents when selecting baby shower invitations and birth announcements?

I’m always a fan of a good monogram! I think that choosing an invitation, whether pre-designed or custom, that allows you to customize with the baby’s monogram makes everything feel very personalized and special. Plus it’s something you can use on other items – think embroidered blankets, nursery signs, etc. Outside of a monogram, for showers, I always recommend going through a stationer that can provide the total package for your event. From invitations, to signage for the day, to cocktail napkins that match. Guests really notice when the event design is cohesive down to the very small detail. Plus it makes it much easier on you or the host of the event.

Where do you suggest parents draw inspiration from when creating unique and personalized invitations/announcements?

Consider what your story may be. Who are you two as a couple and what values do you have as a family? Also, consider your lifestyle and pick something that guests or recipients will know is very “you” when they open it. No need to create a “brand” for this little one but if they had their own signature colors I wouldn’t be opposed 😉

Are there specific baby shower invitations or birth announcement trends you love seeing right now?

I think very sweet and precious designs with small details, focusing on a beautiful photo of your little one is my favorite for an announcement. They are the star of the show so don’t be afraid to let the photo speak for itself. I’m also loving delicate floral patterns, nothing too bold, and of course softer color palettes. Lately, we have seen a huge trend in using QR codes for rsvps. I’m definitely not against this but I try to incorporate the QR code in a way that doesn’t take from the design of the invitation. A small separate card is always my go-to.

What are some must haves to include on a baby shower invitation or a birth announcement?

Don’t forget to have your guests rsvp in enough time for you to give guest counts to your vendors. You want the planning process to go as smoothly as possible and having guests rsvp early helps you to check things off your list with little stress!

Any tips for parents when it comes to sending out their baby shower invitations and birth announcements?

Definitely double-check your addresses and make sure you have the correct postage. This is true for all invitations and announcements. The USPS constantly changes postal rates and your invitation or announcement may require extra postage because of size or shape. It’s always best to visit your local post office and have them weigh and measure your assembled envelope before you order postage. That way you know exactly how much you will need and there will not be any surprises! Also, if you want your envelopes to stay as pristine as possible during mailing, ask if they will “hand cancel” them for you. This will keep them away from damaging machines!

What is the etiquette for sending thank you cards after a baby shower?

Don’t forget to send them! I am traditional and always believe a hand written note is best over a text or email. It just shows you made the extra effort. Thank yous should be sent within a month of the shower for baby showers. Also, please no asking your guests to fill out their own envelopes at the shower (cringe!)

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a joyous occasion filled with love and excitement. By working with a newborn photographer and a talented stationery artist, you can create custom invitations and announcements that perfectly capture the magic of this special time. From selecting the perfect design to sending them out to friends and family, every step of the process is an opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime.

The Best Spring Locations in Cleveland

Educational

Spring is a magical time in Cleveland, Ohio, when nature awakens from its winter slumber. Vibrant colors burst forth in parks, gardens, and waterfronts across the city. With today being the first day of spring, I thought this blog post would be best to share the best spring locations in Cleveland!

Best Spring Locations in Cleveland

1. The Cherry Blossoms at Wade Lagoon

Wade Oval, located in the University Circle, transforms into a vibrant oasis of cherry blossoms and tulips come springtime. The lush grounds surrounding the Cleveland Museum of Art provide a picturesque setting for portraits or simply strolling amidst the flowers. These blooming trees are only around for a short time and they are an absolute must see!

2. Daffodil Hill at Lakeview Cemetery

While Lake View Cemetery is beautiful to walk through all year, in the spring it is bursting with beautiful colors. Usually in late March/early April, the famous Daffodil Hill comes to life. It has an expansive area just filled to the brim with daffodils.

3. Brookside Reservation

This incredibly popular location is a hot destination for portrait sessions of all kinds. And if you are there during Cherry Blossom season, you will easily understand why! While a tiny area dedicated to these spring trees, they are stunning to see when in full bloom! Typically in bloom the first part of April, you can always check the Cleveland Metroparks website for updates! (I recommend going early morning to avoid the crowds!)

4. Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens

This well known mansion is a must during the holidays for it’s over the top light displays and decor. However – it is just as jaw dropping in the spring time! The 70 acre estate features breathtaking gardens, lush landscapes, and architectural marvels that provide endless opportunities for stunning photographs. In spring, the gardens burst to life with vibrant tulips, daffodils, and flowering trees, creating a kaleidoscope of colors that is simply enchanting.

5. Schoepfle Gardens

Located in Birmingham, Ohio, just a short drive from Cleveland, Schoepfle Gardens is a true hidden gem. This enchanting garden sanctuary spans over 70 acres and features meticulously curated landscapes, winding paths, and serene water features. In the spring, the gardens come alive with a kaleidoscope of colors, blooming flowers, fragrant shrubs, and towering trees that is simply breathtaking. You must stroll through the vibrant azalea and rhododendron gardens!

Preparing Your Children For Portraits

Educational

Capturing beautiful family portraits can be a delightful memory, but it’s essential for preparing your children for portraits to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. As a Cleveland Family Photographer, I’ve gathered some helpful tips to help you and your little ones feel relaxed and ready for your session.

Preparing Your Children For Portraits

1. Work Around Nap Time Schedules

Planning your session around your child’s nap time can make a significant difference in their mood and cooperation during the session. Aim for a time when they are well-rested and most likely to be in good spirits. But if you are planned for an evening, sunset session – be sure to move their naps to later that day!

2. Bring Snacks and Comfort Items

Pack some snacks and comfort items, such as their favorite toys or blankets, to keep your children content and engaged throughout the session. These familiar items can provide a sense of security and help them feel more relaxed in front of the camera.

3. Make Sure They’re Fed Before the Session

A hungry child is likely to be cranky and less cooperative during a photoshoot. Ensure that your children are well-fed before arriving at the session to help keep their energy levels up and their mood positive.

4. Have Their Clothes On Before Arriving

To save time and minimize stress, have your children dressed in their photo-ready outfits before arriving at the session. This will eliminate any possible tantrums and make a smoother transition into the photography process.

5. Arrive Early to Get Acclimated

Arriving early gives your children time to get acclimated to the session location and familiarize themselves with their surroundings. This can help alleviate any anxiety or nervousness they may feel and allows for a more relaxed and natural experience.

6. Communicate Expectations in a Positive Manner

Before the session, communicate with your children about what to expect in a positive and encouraging manner. Let them know that the photoshoot will be a fun and exciting experience where they get to show off their smiles and personality. Too, bribery for a special treat (maybe ice cream?) afterwards can help as well!

7. Embrace Flexibility

Despite your best efforts to prepare, it’s essential to remain flexible and go with the flow during the session. Children can be unpredictable, and sometimes the most candid and genuine moments happen when we least expect them.

By following these tips and preparing your children for portraits, you can ensure a successful and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
