welcome to

Halloween, with its whimsical costumes and eerie decorations, is a holiday that I eagerly anticipate all year long. It’s a time for spooky stories, pumpkin patches, and, most importantly, unforgettable Halloween memories! If you’re looking on tips to hosting a memorable Halloween for your family, you are going to love this Halloween inspiration from One Stylish Party! (Be sure to check out her post about this Halloween setup from last year!)

Tara, from One Stylish Party, created this adorable Halloween display last year! I never got to share it as I was at the end of my pregnancy and just counting down the days for Christmas! Ha! But I love the touches she put together to make her home feel all sorts of magical for the Halloween season!

Hosting A Memorable Halloween

Here are a few tips that I gravitate to every year in making a memorable and magical Halloween for my littles!

1. Setting the Stage with Spooky Decorations

Pumpkins are a classic go to in our house. Inside and outside are scattered about with pumpkins here, there and everywhere! Here’s an extra tip: wash your pumpkins when you bring them home with soap and water. They will last you well into Thanksgiving!

For a little spooky touch, I like to put some fake spiderwebs around the lights, shelves and stairs. Bats on the walls and windows, ghosts hanging from the tree branches and floating candles are something I look forward to putting up yearly!

Too, I can’t forget about our themed occasions bin! I LOVE getting to put together an occasions bin for the kids to make the days leading up to Halloween feel even more festive! With themed plates, cups, napkins, straws, sprinkles and so much more – we can add a little something haunted and ghoulish to every meal and snack! You can find out more about occasions bins here!

2. Halloween Treats and Eats

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without delicious treats and eats. Here are some ideas for spooky snacks:

Mummy Hot Dogs: Wrap hot dogs in strips of crescent roll dough and add mustard or ketchup for the mummy’s eyes. The boys in my house love these!

The Sweet Stuff: Candy corn, kettle & caramel corn, caramel apples – these are all favorites in our house and it wouldn’t be Halloween if we weren’t stocked with them! My oldest & I have a big sweet tooth that is certainly satisfied during the Halloween season!

Cider, Hot Cocoa & A Witches Brew: These drinks are constantly in rotation for us. Warm or cold apple cider with apple slices is a fall favorite for myself. Then on our scary movie nights, a *spooky* hot chocolate with eyeball sprinkles, whipped cream and salted caramel flavoring is a total must! Plus, I create a *witches’ brew* punch with Hawaiian punch, sprite & lime sherbet. Add gummy worms for an extra spooky effect!

3. Halloween Games and Activities

Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without these festive activities!

Trick or Treat: An obvious one here! My oldest counts down the days until our neighborhood trick or treat night! And we love how our neighbors get into the holiday with spooky yard decorations and so many haunted garage walkthroughs! Such fun!

Pumpkin Carving: We save this for just a few days before trick or treat night so our pumpkins don’t rot too early! It’s also my husband’s favorite activity so he can roast the pumpkin seeds for a snack.

Outdoor Scary Movie Night: We started doing this a couple years ago and we look forward to it so much! I try to do this as early in the month as possible when the weather isn’t too crisp & cool. But a roaring bonfire next to us helps take off the chill. I try to do a not so scary movie for the kids and a really spooky one for the adults!

I hope you were able to gather a few tips & gain some inspiration for hosting a memorable Halloween for your own family this year! My hope for the boys is to create a nostalgic & memorable Halloween. Halloween was so great during the 90’s and early 2000’s, don’t you agree? That is my inspiration and goal for this year, to make it magical for them too. I know it had so much to do with my mom making it perfect for my brother and I, so I can only hope to step up to the plate for my boys in the same way. Happy Halloween friends!

When I said I love spring outdoor sessions, I mean I REALLY love spring outdoor sessions! I am so excited to share this cherry blossom family session that I captured with the Johnson family. We were catching the end of the cherry blossom prime bloom time before the petals had all fallen and was able to capture just a dreamy floral portrait! Oh these are so good my friends!

I have had the pleasure of photographing Windy, Adam & Charlie before for their maternity and newborn portraits! It has been some time since I have gotten to see Charlie so it was really fun seeing him running around and his sweet personality!

Cherry Blossom Family Session

Our session was originally scheduled for in the evening but with storms on the way, we moved it to that morning and let me tell you – it was a very, very warm morning for April! I was sweating by the time we were finished and as yucky as that is, it means those warm summer sessions are not too far away and I was THRILLED about that! Ha! It was also really windy but it made some beautiful moments during their session, shaking the petals all around them as they played under the cherry blossoms.

I always tell my families, be prepared to play during your session with your little ones! Playing tag, airplane, peek a boo – all the things you love to do together at home, is exactly what we will do during your portraits! It makes it such an enjoyable experience for your children when it is more like family time together, than sitting and smiling for portraits! (But don’t worry – I will still get that smiling at the camera pose too!)

I love that I am back to photographing families again and getting the chance to see my families grow over the years! Are you ready to update your family portraits? I would be thrilled to document the season you are in! Let’s start the conversation! Want to be included in my newsletter for all the details on my seasonal minis? Click here!

You guys. Every year, I swear I forgot how beautiful the spring season is in Ohio. And every year, when I take outdoor spring portraits with any blooming, flowering trees – I am just in awe. My dear friend , who is also a fabulous motherhood photographer, and her two boys had the dreamiest motherhood session during cherry blossom season.

The park was FILLED and I mean FILLED with other photographers and locals taking in the beautiful trees. The weather was a perfect 70 degrees and partly sunny, so everyone was just out and about soaking it in. But you would never know that we were shoulder to shoulder with others getting in as many photographs as we could as we both wrangled our boys for these portraits. (We took each others pictures with our boys and yes, it was absolutely a workout and made us both question our sanity! Ha!)

Cherry Blossom Motherhood Session

E is also expecting her 3rd baby so we were sure to document a few early maternity portraits and I just love how romantic and feminine these photos feel. She is not finding out the gender this time around and I envy her patience! I wanted to do that with T but I’m too much of a planner and ended up needing to know! I told her I am guessing girl, however I ALWAYS guess wrong so it’s probably a boy – which she thinks it is!

The cherry blossom season doesn’t last very long so it is truly a gift to get these portraits! If you are interested in getting portraits with the cherry blossoms, it is best to plan for a week or two around prime bloom! (Here in Ohio, it is typically the first or middle part of April.) But let me tell you, it is totally worth it and so dreamy!

I plan to share a few snip its of my photos with the boys in my next post. 🙂

If I am being honest, it seems to weird to me to be sharing a family session here on the blog! While it hasn’t been so long to photograph a family session, it has been quite some time sharing one for all to see. For the past few years, I focused solely on weddings, maternity & newborn sessions that I didn’t share when a past client of mine would book a family session or share snip its of my mini sessions that I would host every year. But today I have a Schoepfle Garden family session to share with you all and it feels really, really nice to see these back here on the blog!

A Schoepfle Garden Family Session

Mama had a portrait session with me many years ago, with her and her children! Back then I did not realize what they were, but it was very much so a motherhood session and I am happy to get to see her kiddos once again and how much they have grown!

Mom chose one of my favorite locations for her family session, Schoepfle Gardens! This location has so many nooks, crannies & beautiful backgrounds to choose from and really shines in the spring with all the blooming flowers! While we did come right at the beginning of the spring season, we were still able to find some really great spots that offered nice greenery and even a few small little blooms to give us that spring feeling to their family portraits!

Photographing in the early spring here in Ohio can be tricky. It can tend to still be quite brown & gloomy, however with these few tips, you can avoid those leaf-less trees and still have the feel of spring! Find a greenery bush that is “bloomed” year round. This includes rhododendron bushes, bamboo and even pine trees too! Wear pastel & spring colors to add in color if you can’t find any in the location you are at. Lastly, be sure to photograph on a bright, sunny day! This doesn’t always get to happen, I know. But having that sun shining on you brings the little bit of pop that you’ll be looking for!
