10 Unforgettable Experiences Along Ohio’s Coast

Summer along Lake Erie has its own kind of magic. It is ferry rides under a wide open sky, roller coasters rising above the water, lighthouse visits, baskets of fresh perch, sandy feet, late sunsets, and ice cream cones that melt faster than little hands can keep up with.

This Lake Erie Summer Bucket List was created for families who want to make the most of the season without needing to travel far from home. From Cleveland to Geneva-on-the-Lake and west toward the Lake Erie Islands, Ohio’s coast is filled with beautiful places to explore, eat, play, and return to year after year.

You do not have to complete this list all at once. Choose one for a free Saturday, plan a weekend around a few favorites, or slowly make your way through the list as your children grow.

The Lake Erie Summer Bucket List

1. Ride a Lake Erie Roller Coaster at Cedar Point

Few places feel more connected to summer in Ohio than Cedar Point. Set on a peninsula in Sandusky, the park gives families that classic amusement park feeling with the added beauty of Lake Erie surrounding it.

For thrill seekers, Cedar Point is known for its incredible roller coasters. For families with younger children, there are plenty of smaller rides, live entertainment, classic treats, and slower moments tucked between the excitement.

My personal recommendation is to take the train toward the back of the park and work your way forward. We love grabbing a pretzel with cream cheese near the entrance and cinnamon rolls before heading into Frontier Town.

Before visiting, check the park’s current hours, ticket options, ride availability, and height requirements.

2. Take the Ferry to Put-in-Bay and Explore by Golf Cart

The ferry ride to Put-in-Bay is part of the experience. Whether you take the Miller Ferry from Catawba Island or the Jet Express from Port Clinton or Sandusky, the journey immediately makes the day feel special.

Once you arrive on South Bass Island, rent a golf cart and explore at your own pace. Visit Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, walk through DeRivera Park, explore Perry’s Cave, visit the Butterfly House, or enjoy the views from South Bass Island State Park.

Although Put-in-Bay is often known for its nightlife, it can be a wonderful daytime destination for families. Children tend to remember the ferry and golf cart just as much as the attractions themselves. And if you go, do not miss a bowl of lobster bisque from The Boardwalk.

3. See the Glacial Grooves on Kelleys Island

For a quieter island adventure, take the Kelleys Island Ferry from Marblehead and spend the day exploring one of Ohio’s most fascinating natural landmarks.

The Glacial Grooves were carved into limestone by ancient glaciers and are among the largest accessible examples of their kind. It is one of those stops that feels both beautiful and educational, especially for curious children.

After visiting the grooves, rent bicycles or a golf cart, explore Kelleys Island State Park, walk the trails, visit the beach, enjoy lunch downtown, and look for fossils along the rocky shoreline.

Kelleys Island feels slower and more natural than Put-in-Bay, which makes it especially lovely for families who prefer quiet exploring, scenic views, and an unhurried day near the water.

4. Visit Marblehead Lighthouse and Stop at Brown’s Dairy Dock

Marblehead Lighthouse is one of the most iconic landmarks along Lake Erie, and it is absolutely worth adding to your summer plans.

Walk through the state park, carefully explore the rocky shoreline, and take in views of Sandusky Bay, Cedar Point, and the Lake Erie Islands. The lighthouse has guided sailors along the Marblehead Peninsula for generations, making it a beautiful place to introduce children to the history of the Great Lakes.

Tower tours and museum hours are seasonal, so check current information before visiting. Even when the tower is not open, the park itself is still worth the drive.

Afterward, stop at Brown’s Dairy Dock for ice cream. A lighthouse visit followed by a classic summer cone feels like the kind of afternoon children remember for years. This is personally one of my favorite drives along the Lake Erie shore.

5. Feed the Animals at African Safari Wildlife Park

If you want a Lake Erie-area adventure that does not involve the beach, African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton is a wonderful option.

The drive-through safari allows families to see and feed animals from their own vehicle, which makes it especially helpful for families with younger children. There is also a walk-through area with additional animals and educational experiences.

This is a great stop to pair with Marblehead, Catawba Island, or dinner in Port Clinton. Before visiting, review admission options, feeding guidelines, seasonal hours, and whether reservations are recommended.

6. See Cleveland From the Water on a Sightseeing Cruise

Cleveland feels completely different from the water. A sightseeing cruise aboard the GOODTIME III gives families views of downtown Cleveland, the Cuyahoga River, the Flats, and Lake Erie.

A narrated cruise can also help children understand the connection between the city, the river, and the lake. The changing views of bridges, waterfront architecture, industrial landmarks, and the Cleveland skyline make the outing both scenic and educational.

Cruise schedules vary throughout the summer, so check the calendar and reserve tickets in advance. Bring a light layer, because the breeze on the water can feel cooler than expected.

This also makes a lovely anniversary or date-night option if you are looking for something a little different along the lake.

7. Ride the Carousel at Sandusky’s Merry-Go-Round Museum

The Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky is one of those nostalgic stops that feels sweet, simple, and surprisingly special.

The museum celebrates the history and artistry of American carousels through hand-carved figures, vintage band organs, restoration demonstrations, and an operating carousel. Children can enjoy the ride while adults appreciate the craftsmanship behind each beautifully detailed piece.

This is also a wonderful rainy-day or too-hot-day addition to your summer list.

Afterward, walk through downtown Sandusky, visit Jackson Street Pier, and finish with a scoop from Toft’s Dairy, an Ohio favorite dating back to 1900.

8. Take a Boat Tour to the Lorain Lighthouse

Many Northeast Ohio families have admired the Lorain Lighthouse from shore, but seeing it by boat turns a familiar landmark into a true Lake Erie experience.

The Lorain Port Authority offers seasonal lighthouse tours, history excursions, and cruises. Depending on the tour, families can learn about Lorain’s maritime history, travel along the Black River, and see the “Jewel of the Port” from a new perspective.

Tours are seasonal, weather dependent, and often limited to select dates, so reserve tickets early and review accessibility details before booking.

Before or after your tour, visit Lakeview Park to walk through the rose garden, enjoy the beach, and see the lighthouse from shore. Lakeview is one of my personal favorite beaches along Lake Erie. It is beautiful, classic, and still somehow underrated.

9. Spend a Nostalgic Summer Evening at Geneva-on-the-Lake

For an evening that feels charmingly unchanged by time, plan a visit to Geneva-on-the-Lake.

Walk the strip, browse the shops, visit an arcade, and play a round at Allison’s Mini Golf, which has been entertaining visitors since 1924. If your family wants a little more activity, Adventure Zone offers go-karts, bumper boats, miniature golf, climbing activities, a carousel, and arcade games.

Leave time for a casual dinner, ice cream, and a sunset stop at Geneva State Park or a nearby lakefront overlook.

Many attractions operate seasonally, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so check hours before visiting.

10. Eat Lake Erie Perch Beside the Water in Port Clinton

A thoughtful Lake Erie Summer Bucket List should include the flavors of the region, too.

Port Clinton is one of the best places to enjoy Lake Erie perch or walleye after a day exploring the western shoreline. For a casual local favorite, visit Jolly Roger Seafood House for perch, walleye, and classic seafood favorites.

For waterfront dining, Dock’s Beach House offers seasonal meals beside the lake with a sandy beach nearby. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the Lake Erie Islands in the distance.

Pair dinner with a walk near the Port Clinton Lighthouse or Waterworks Park. It is a simple ending to the day, but one that captures the beauty of summer along the coast: fresh fish, open water, and nowhere else you need to be..

More Experiences to Add to Your Lake Erie Summer Bucket List

Still looking for another adventure? Consider adding one of these Lake Erie experiences:

  • Spend a day inside the gates of Lakeside Chautauqua
  • Visit the Port Clinton Lighthouse and walk through Waterworks Park
  • Explore the Great Lakes Science Center and Steamship William G. Mather
  • Attend an outdoor concert at Black River Landing in Lorain
  • Visit the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo
  • Spend the day at Cedar Point Shores Waterpark
  • Take a family photograph beside the same Lake Erie landmark every summer ( I can help you with this! )

You do not need to complete every experience in one season. In fact, I think the best summer traditions are the ones that unfold slowly.

A carousel ride and enormous ice cream cone may feel perfect with a preschooler. Island adventures, fishing charters, and roller coasters may become favorites as your children grow. Some years may be full of big outings. Other years may be remembered for one quiet evening beside the water.

Visit Marblehead Lighthouse every July. Return to Vermilion for one final sunset before school begins. Take the same photograph beside the lake each August and watch how quickly your children change.

The most meaningful summers are rarely remembered by how much we accomplished. They are remembered in ferry rides, lighthouse steps, sticky hands, windblown hair, sandy sandals, and the evenings we stayed beside the water just a little longer.
