Capturing beautiful family portraits can be a delightful memory, but it’s essential for preparing your children for portraits to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. As a Cleveland Family Photographer, I’ve gathered some helpful tips to help you and your little ones feel relaxed and ready for your session.
Preparing Your Children For Portraits
1. Work Around Nap Time Schedules
Planning your session around your child’s nap time can make a significant difference in their mood and cooperation during the session. Aim for a time when they are well-rested and most likely to be in good spirits. But if you are planned for an evening, sunset session – be sure to move their naps to later that day!
2. Bring Snacks and Comfort Items
Pack some snacks and comfort items, such as their favorite toys or blankets, to keep your children content and engaged throughout the session. These familiar items can provide a sense of security and help them feel more relaxed in front of the camera.
3. Make Sure They’re Fed Before the Session
A hungry child is likely to be cranky and less cooperative during a photoshoot. Ensure that your children are well-fed before arriving at the session to help keep their energy levels up and their mood positive.
4. Have Their Clothes On Before Arriving
To save time and minimize stress, have your children dressed in their photo-ready outfits before arriving at the session. This will eliminate any possible tantrums and make a smoother transition into the photography process.
5. Arrive Early to Get Acclimated
Arriving early gives your children time to get acclimated to the session location and familiarize themselves with their surroundings. This can help alleviate any anxiety or nervousness they may feel and allows for a more relaxed and natural experience.
6. Communicate Expectations in a Positive Manner
Before the session, communicate with your children about what to expect in a positive and encouraging manner. Let them know that the photoshoot will be a fun and exciting experience where they get to show off their smiles and personality. Too, bribery for a special treat (maybe ice cream?) afterwards can help as well!
7. Embrace Flexibility
Despite your best efforts to prepare, it’s essential to remain flexible and go with the flow during the session. Children can be unpredictable, and sometimes the most candid and genuine moments happen when we least expect them.
By following these tips and preparing your children for portraits, you can ensure a successful and enjoyable experience for the whole family.

As a parent and a photographer, there are moments that hold a special place in our hearts—none more so than capturing the one-year milestone session of our little ones. Recently, I had the joy of photographing my son’s first-year celebration, opting for the comfort of home to create timeless memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.
The day was nothing simple. The weather was a beautiful 60 degrees in the winter with the sun shining. I just had to take the opportunity to grab some quick portraits of my littlest to remember him at 12 months.
One Year Milestone Session
The simplicity of the backyard setting allowed my son to shine, with each photograph capturing the purity of his joy and curiosity. The goal was to create images that wouldn’t just be beautiful now but could be proudly displayed for years to come. By choosing a neutral palette, the resulting photographs are classic heirlooms. These images will stand the test of time, blending seamlessly with any décor or style, and serving as a visual representation of the love and joy that surrounds our family.
The session began with capturing individual portraits of my son, focusing on his charming expressions, tiny fingers, and the innocence that defines the first year of life. Whether he was sitting, crawling, or taking those wobbly steps, every moment was a precious memory frozen in time.

One of the most heartwarming ways to add a personal touch to your decor is by displaying portraits around your home. As a Cleveland Family Photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of helping countless families bring their cherished memories to life in their homes. I’m excited to share some creative ideas on how you can showcase your precious memories with classic and sophisticated style.
Gallery Wall:
Transform a blank wall into a captivating gallery by arranging a mix of framed photos in various sizes and shapes. Experiment with different layouts until you find one that speaks to your family’s personality. Whether it’s a symmetrical grid or an eclectic mix, a gallery wall adds visual interest and tells your family’s story in a beautiful way.
Statement Frames:
Make a bold statement with oversized frames that serve as focal points in your home. Choose a few favorite photos and showcase them in large frames to draw attention and create a stunning visual impact. Place them strategically in high-traffic areas such as the living room or hallway to spark conversation and evoke fond memories.
Floating Shelves Display:
Utilize floating shelves to display a rotating selection of framed photos. Arrange them along the shelves along with other decorative elements such as candles, plants, or trinkets to create visual interest. This versatile display allows you to easily update and swap out photos whenever you want to freshen up your space. (A perfect suggestion for babies first year!)
Coffee Table Heirloom Album:
Turn your coffee table into a conversation starter by crafting a family album filled with your favorite photos from your session. Choose a beautiful linen or leather album with a personalized cover that reflects your family’s style. Display it prominently on your coffee table, inviting guests to flip through and relive cherished memories together.
Choosing a Cleveland Family Photographer who offers printing and framing services can make the process of decorating your walls a breeze. Too,not only could I capture stunning portraits of your family, but also provide professional-quality prints and frames that are ready to display.
